In today’s world, where sustainability and wellness are reshaping our choices, natural cosmetics are no longer just a trend—they are becoming a cornerstone of our beauty routines. In fact, nearly two-thirds of women say they would be willing to pay more for skincare products that are sustainable. The reasoning is clear: three-quarters (75%) believe they are investing in a better-quality product, while 37% feel by paying more they are doing something ‘good’ for the planet. As Natural Cosmetics Week 2024 (NCW) approaches, this global celebration presents a perfect opportunity to explore why natural beauty products matter, and why we should embrace them – for the benefit of our skin and the planet alike.

Natural cosmetics are rooted in the philosophy of utilising ingredients derived from nature, without compromising on quality or efficacy. Contrary to common misconceptions, natural products are held to the same rigorous safety and quality standards as conventional ones. In fact, like all other cosmetics, natural and organic cosmetics are subjected to strict safety assessments required by cosmetics legislation (Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009) in order to be able to be placed in the market.

The difference, however, comes in the formulation. Natural cosmetics avoid synthetic substances derived from mineral oil or petrochemicals like phthalates or oxybenzone, and instead using plant oils and other extracts – including those from certified organic agriculture, as well as other derived natural substances that work in harmony with the skin. Over time, raw material and product innovations in the natural beauty sector have demonstrated natural (including organic) substances and products can offer the same broad range of functionalities and categories as conventional ranges.. For example, botanical oils provide deep hydration, while plant extracts like chamomile or green tea help soothe irritation—proving that natural does not mean less effective.

The main distinction between a conventional cosmetic and a natural (or organic) cosmetic lies in the composition of their formula. Conventional cosmetics are predominately made from petrochemical-based ingredients (e.g. mineral oil derivatives), which can include non-natural fragrances and synthetic substances such as phthalates, formaldehyde, or triclosan. Natural cosmetics, on the other hand, are formulated with inorganic minerals, natural and organic plant extracts, fermentation products from microorganism or substances derived from any of these sources. Common ingredients such as shea butter, lavender or rose oil, and aloe vera provide natural solutions for hydration, nourishment, and skin rejuvenation.

However, as consumer demand for natural cosmetics has grown, so too has the prevalence of misleading claims. Many brands claim their cosmetics as ‘natural’, ‘bio’, ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘vegan’ even when their formulations do not fully reflect these principles. This is what we call ‘nature-inspired’ cosmetics. These products may include an undefined small amount of natural ingredients in their formulation, but rely heavily on synthetic components, leading to accusations of greenwashing. This makes it all the more important for consumers to seek out certifications and third-party certified standards in natural and organic cosmetics, like NATRUE’s own label scheme, to ensure they are genuinely investing in cosmetics that meet their expectations.

Natural cosmetics derive their strength from ingredients that come directly from nature. Rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and essential nutrients, these ingredients help to nourish, protect, and balance the skin. For example aloe vera is known for its soothing, hydrating properties, and has long been a staple in natural skincare. Similarly, essential oils such as rose, mint, and thyme provide not only aromatic benefits but also soothing, refreshing, and purifying properties respectively.

What sets natural ingredients apart is their ability to work harmoniously with the skin and offer deep nourishment. Unlike synthetic substances, plant-based ingredients offer gentler, yet effective, alternatives. These ingredients also have broader environmental benefits: they are typically readily biodegradable, renewable, and to maintain their renewability need to be sustainably sourced.
